Industry Sector: Energy From Waste
Project: Westfield ERF
Services Provided: Rope Access & Motar Pointing
Background:
FP McCann, a leading manufacturer and supplier of precast concrete products, was engaged in the construction of a significant project at Westfield. As part of the construction, a lift shaft required precision pointing. However, the project encountered an unexpected challenge when the sub-contractor responsible for this task failed to complete the work within the scheduled timeline. This situation threatened to delay the entire project, potentially incurring penalties for FP McCann.
Challenge:
The primary challenges of the project included:
- Tight Schedule: The time-sensitive nature of the project required an immediate response to avoid costly project setbacks.
- Skill requirement: the project required skilled operatives to perform tasks at height, with precision and efficiency.
Solution:
Within 24 hours of receiving the initial enquiry, a member of our management team was on-site to assess the situation. This quick response allowed us to provide a detailed quotation for the necessary work, ensuring transparency and efficiency from the outset.
To meet the tight deadline, we deployed a highly skilled 2-man rope access team. The team’s expertise in working at height and their ability to operate in confined spaces made them ideal for this task.
The team undertook the following tasks:
- Foam Trimming: Neatly cutting back all extruding foam to allow for mortar pointing in horizontal joints.
- Mortar Application: Applying a specialized mortar mix to all unfilled joints to ensure the structural integrity and readiness of the shaft for lift installation.
- Finishing Touches: Carefully removing any excessive mortar overflow to achieve a neat, flush finish, crucial for the subsequent installation process.
The efficient coordination and execution of these tasks ensured that the work was completed within the 2-day window, minimising any potential delays & penalties.
Conclusion:
The successful completion of the lift shaft pointing at Westfield demonstrated our ability to respond quickly and effectively to time-sensitive construction challenges. By deploying a specialised 2-man rope access team, we were able to meet FP McCann’s urgent requirements without compromising on quality or safety. As a result, FP McCann avoided any penalties or delays in their project schedule. This case highlights the importance of rapid response and expert execution in the construction industry, particularly when faced with unforeseen challenges.
